1. Chromatography Butterflies

Chromatography is a scientific technique used to separate mixtures into their individual components. Kids can create beautiful, colorful butterflies while learning about this fascinating process. To make chromatography butterflies, you'll need coffee filters, markers, water, and pipe cleaners. Have the children draw designs on the coffee filters using the markers, then carefully fold the filters and dip the tips into water. As the water travels up the filter, it will separate the marker colors, creating a stunning tie-dye effect. Once the filters are dry, gather them in the middle and secure them with a pipe cleaner to form the butterfly's body.

2. Marbled Milk Paper

This project demonstrates the science of surface tension while creating unique, marbled designs on paper. You'll need a shallow dish, whole milk, food coloring, dish soap, and heavy paper or card stock. Pour the milk into the dish, then add drops of food coloring on top of the milk. Encourage the children to experiment with different color combinations. Next, add a small drop of dish soap to the center of the milk and watch as the colors suddenly burst outward, creating intricate designs. Carefully lay a piece of paper on top of the milk, then lift it to reveal the marbled pattern.

Encourage them to research each planet and include important details such as size, color, and unique features. 4. Crystal Suncatchers

Mix borax and boiling water until the borax is fully dissolved, then add food coloring if desired. Suspend the pipe cleaner designs in the borax solution overnight.
